WHAT'S NEARBY
City Traveller is in downtown Auckland on Anzac Avenue – located just a short walk from the harbour front, lower Queen Street and Britomart's new bar scene.
Auckland’s waterfront has undergone a remarkable resurgence in recent years with new bars, clubs and restaurants – harbour areas upgraded from Queens Wharf to the Vidaduct and the west towards Westhaven Marina, the new harbour front area, Wynyard Quarter.
The Britomart scene is only two blocks away, and this area has also seen substantial investment with the historic area upgraded around the old Central Post Office (Britomart) – now the centre of new open spaces plus new bars and restaurants . This whole area and nearby Fort Street, just off Queen Street, is where it’s all happening.
The Britomart train and bus station hub is the centre of public land transport in Auckland with services around the city throughout the day. This includes the Air Bus to and from Auckland International Airport which leaves every 15 minutes during the day and 30 minutes in the middle of the night.
Across the road (Quay Street) from Britomart is the historic brown Ferry Building, home to all the passenger ferries that can take you to islands in the Hauraki Gulf or to points around the city harbour.
Right on Anzac Ave buses are easy to catch to southern and western suburbs from bus stops outside City Travellers.
Vector Arena is only one block away and when there’s a concert or a game on in town, this area is pumping.
Finally, just up the road on Anzac Ave, which becomes Symonds Street, lies Auckland University – New Zealand’s largest and most well-known centre of higher education.
What to do in Auckland
Auckland is a true Pacific City – which is an exciting mix of European, Asian and Pacific cultures in a maritime setting unrivalled by any city in the world. It is also called the ‘City of Sails’ and enjoys two spectacular harbours and the wider Hauraki Gulf – collectively, it is home to more sail boats than any other city on earth. Take advantage of these natural and cultural attractions by planning a visit to one of these locations:
- Take a ferry to Waiheke Island for beaches and vineyards.
- Kayak or take a ferry to Rangitoto Island and hike to the top for spectacular city views. Kayak rentals are available from Orakei Basin a short bus ride or longer walk around the harbour towards Mission Bay.
- Go sailing in the City of Sails. Americas Cup yachts offer a short but exciting experience of the excitement of wind and water – while other sailing operators offer longer experiences or even sailing courses. Most are centred around the Viaduct basin.
- Shop on Queen Street and surrounding areas including Chancery Lane, High Street and Vulcan Lane.
- Bungy jump off the Sky Tower or Auckland Harbour Bridge.
- Jet boat in the harbour or sail an America’s Cup yacht from the Viaduct.
- Surf at Piha Beach on the west coast or go hiking in the volcanic hills that border these spectacular beaches that lie west of Auckland on the Tasman Sea.
DINING
One bedroom studios have kitchen facilities and our dorm rooms have shared communal kitchens. For food shopping, a 5 minute walk away on the corner of Quay Street and Tangihau Street is a large Countdown Supermarket – with smaller convenience stores even closer by.
The best of the CBD’s cafes, bars and restaurants are all within walking distance. One of Auckland’s best yum cha restaurants is at the end of the street and there are a range of other cafes and restaurants right on Anzac Ave.
For dozens of other options, head out the door and down the hill to the Britomart precinct, a block or two further to the restaurants and bars around or on the Viaduct Harbour or on Princes Wharf – where spectacular settings and a huge choice of cuisines and prices from medium to high. For a range of other options – including more budget fare veer west and head to Queen Street and its bustling side streets – especially Vulcan Lane, High Street, Albert and Federal Streets.
